Exclusion of Surplus Course for GGA Calculation

For students admitted in 2017-18 or before, the classification of awards is based on students’ Graduation Grade Average (GGA). Students may request surplus courses to be excluded from the calculation of GGA (note that CGA remains unchanged and will not be improved by excluding surplus courses.) Exclusion of surplus courses is subject to the following conditions:

i. Courses required for the award of the student’s degree cannot be excluded
ii. No more than 9 credits may be excluded for the 3-year curriculum (including students who studied preparatory year in HKUST, and applicable to students admitted in 2011-12 and after)
iii. No more than 12 credits may be excluded for the 4-year curriculum

In computing the GGA, courses taken in the first year of study of a degree are given a half-weight. If students entered the University with credit transfer of 10 credits or more, they are not eligible for this half-weight concession.

Students may check the conversion table to match the GGA with the respective class of honors.

Only those potential graduates who will be completing all the program requirements in 2023-24 Winter can apply for excluding surplus courses from GGA calculation at this stage. If students who fall into this category cannot get access to the system, please write to bmug@ust.hk for assistance.

The application period is from 31 Jan 2024 2:00pm – 16 Feb 2024 11:59pm. Potential graduates should strictly observe the deadline. Late application is not accepted. Please follow the procedure listed below:

1. Use your ITSC account to login
2. Tick the courses that you want to exclude from the calculation of GGA
3. SBM will review your application before forwarding the list to ARO
4. Decision from the ARO is final

The GGA shown is for students’ reference only. There might be slight variation between your calculation and the University system. Final confirmation is upon the decision of the University.
